Oh yeah~ My first fanmix, for the fiercest bitch to ever fierce--Azula.

o1. The Infanta - The Decemberists

here she comes, in her palanquin
on the back of an elephant
on a bed made of linen and sequins and silk
all astride, on her father's line
with the king and his concubines
and her nurse with her pitchers of liquors and milk
and we'll all come praise the infanta
and we'll all come praise the infanta

"I'm so used to everyone worshipping us."

o2. 10 Dollar - M.I.A.

she skipped away to the shop
she found she didn't have enough
she clocked him looking right at her
and sucked on a lollipop

A bit of a silly song, but I always picure baby!Azula when I listen to it, particularly this stanza.

o3. Invincible - OK Go

when they finally come to destroy the earth, they'll have to go through you first
I bet they won't be expecting that
when they finally come to destroy the earth, they'll have to deal with you first
and now my money says they won't know about the
thousand fahrenheit hot metal lights behind your eyes, invincible
when they finally come, what'll you do to them?
gonna decimate them like you did to me?
will you leave them stunned and stuttering?
when they finally come, how will you handle them?
will you devastate them deliberately?

Azula could hand you your own beating heart, basically.

o4. Alright Alright (Here's My Fist, Where's the Fight?) - Sahara Hotnights

now I feel like breaking laws
gonna start a civil war
here's my fist, where's the fight, ha?
your world is collapsing tonight
now I feel like dropping bombs
black out your house if you're at home
hurt but healed still coming on
in the mess where I'm from
I can't get enough
I can't get enough
I can't get enough of it

And one of the best things about Azula is how obviously she relishes kicking the crap out of people.

o5. I'm Your Villain - Franz Ferdinand

you toss in a word
and I'm your villain
I see the passion emerge
and I'm your villain
but serious
you're so serious
if I could laugh I'd love you
if I could smile at anything you said
I think you'd prefer to be miserable instead
if I could love I'd love you
if I could love like anybody else

I know what I am
and I'm your villain
although I don't give a damn if
I'm your villain
because serious
you're so serious
but I've got ready salted
ready on your belly
if you want to have fun

see you later, baby see you later...

Azula to Zuko.

o6. Devil Inside - Utada Hikaru

maybe there's a devil (or something like it) inside
maybe there's a devil (or something like it) inside of me
devil (or something like it) inside
maybe there's a devil somewhere really deep inside me
devil inside of me
jealous angel deep inside me

time to make it burn
this is how I burn

One of the things I really love about Azula's character is that the creators went ahead and made her a psychopath. To a large extent, Azula is the product of her father's manipulation and the general air of ruthlessness that pervaded the Fire Nation pre-Zuko, but I think it's clear that even if she had been born into an utterly normal situation, there would have been something not-quite-right about her.

o7. Breaking Up the Girl - Garbage

one mistake's all it takes
and your life has come undone
walk away cause you're breaking up the girl
it's a drag
I know it's hard
but you're tearing her apart
walk away cause you're breaking up the girl

I am afraid that there's much to be afraid of
here today and gone tomorrow
don't end up in the gutter
just like the one before
you're just the same
such a loser

you've go to let her go because you're breaking up
you're breaking up the girl

Sozin's Comet Azula, in the process of falling from grace.

o8. Hanging High - Lykke Li

oh thunder in my heart
these razors cutting sharp
and leaves me with an ever bleeding scar
so soft, so suddenly
so that I can not breathe
I'm drawn into a circle painted black
oh I'm hanging high
oh won't you let me down
back where I started at
you know I'm a little lost
and when it hurts the most
I'll push a little more
I'm back where I started at
you know I'm a little lost
like lightning in my heart
a kiss so burning hot
I'm hanging on a thread that's bound to drop
like rain on open skies
don't know the reason why
but I'll always choose the black in front of white
oh I'm hanging high

Azula and Ursa. Azula's belief that her mother thought her to be "a monster" seems to have really shaped her own view of herself--a facet of her personality that I love. It's something that she's forced into a dark corner of her mind, but something that chews at her nonetheless. This song really struck me because of that--Azula's relationship with her mother has always had her "hanging high" and because of it, in a lot of ways, she's always been "a little lost."

o9. Living in Exile - Sleater-Kinney

once I had all, had everything
the real princess, the ruling queen.
I walked with arrogance, with vanity
but I made sure my heart
they wouldn't see.

one day I woke up it was gone
the castle kingdom all were lost.
now I have nothing left,
nowhere to go.
and my heart that's full of doubt
is all I've left to show.

she is living in exile.

I'll walk 3,000 lonely miles.
I'll start a new life on my own.
don't know what I'm waiting for,
but when it comes,
you know I'll be ready
a new woman.

I know my head is my worst enemy
swallowed too much of it and started to believe
I know my heart is my worst enemy
swallowed too much of it and started to believe

Azula defeated.

1o. Avril 14th - Aphex Twin

This song has such a sad, lovely sound to it, and I chose it because it makes me picture Azula as she is post-series--utterly destroyed, spending her days in a facility that is probably state-of-the-art and staffed with helpful nurses, but is a constant reminder of her total, humilating defeat. I just picture her (set to this song of course) sitting in her room day after day, thinking of what might have been while people try to ananlyze her into goodness. But like she said, she'll always have been born with power--the Divine Right to Rule. Who knows what roads that will take her to in the future?

Yeahhh, Nancy Farmer! I never actually read that book, but I love the title and did love The House of the Scorpion by her, which was brilliant. And I just got into the Decemberists and wow, they really are great.

Anyway, thanks for checking this out!

It was a good book, but so were all of hers. Have you listened to the Hazards of Love yet from Decemberists? It's their new album, and is one giant story of awesome. It was on YouTube last I checked...

I listened to your mix, and I gotta say, this is one of the few FSTs where I think every song applys really well to the character. I especially like the last one, the instrumental. It is different (quiet, calmer) from the rest, but I can really see it fitting her post-series. Thanks again for sharing.
